A PDE5 inhibitor (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor) is a chemical compound or drug that increase blood flow to the penis. It does this by slowing down or inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 from acting on cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP leads to smooth muscle relaxation in blood vessels of the penis allowing for increased blood flow during sexual stimulation. In other words PDE5 is produced naturally in your body to reduce cGMP, but the cGMP is good if you are trying to get an erection.
